This campaign wants every Burbank resident to be able to use this website, including people who navigate with a keyboard, use a screen reader, need larger text, or find motion difficult.

The standard we aim for

We build against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the standard public agencies in California are generally held to, and we think a campaign for city office should hold itself to the same one.

We do not claim the site is perfect. We claim we test it, we fix what we find, and we want to hear about what we miss.

What we have done

Keyboard access. Every link, button, form field, and dialog can be reached and operated without a mouse. A "Skip to main content" link appears when you press Tab, so you do not have to move through the whole menu on every page.
Visible focus. Whatever you are focused on is outlined clearly, not hidden.
Dialogs. The volunteer, house party, yard sign, and RSVP forms open in dialogs that keep keyboard focus inside them while open, close with the Escape key, and return focus to the button that opened them.
Color contrast. Text and background combinations across the site were measured against the WCAG AA thresholds. Two colors failed and were darkened.
Images. Every photograph has a text description for screen readers. Decorative graphics are marked so screen readers skip them rather than reading noise.
Form errors. Validation messages name the specific field that needs attention and are announced to screen readers rather than only appearing visually.
Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations and smooth scrolling are turned off.
Zoom and resizing. The site reflows down to small screens and holds up when text is enlarged.
Language. Each page declares its language, so screen readers pronounce English and Spanish correctly. A full Spanish version of this site is available.

Known limitations

Being straightforward about what is not finished:

The site has been tested with automated tools and by keyboard. It has not yet been tested end to end with a screen reader by someone who uses one daily.
Event listings come from a spreadsheet the campaign maintains. If an event is entered with unclear wording, that wording appears on the site as written.
Donations are handled by ActBlue, and event links may point to other organizations' pages. We do not control the accessibility of those sites.

If you need information from this site in another format, or you would rather give us your information by phone or in person, email us and we will arrange it. Nobody should have to use a website to take part in this campaign.
